Finding Your Way Out of Chronic Pain: A Neuroscience‑Informed Approach
How my coaching can help people in chronic pain to get their life back

Chronic pain can feel like a life that’s slowly shrinking — fewer movements, fewer joys, fewer moments where your body feels like home. But modern neuroscience offers a different story: one where pain is not a life sentence, but a pattern the brain can learn and unlearn. My work is built on this hopeful science.
I help people reduce and often resolve chronic pain by working directly with the nervous system — using pain reprocessing, emotional processing, and gentle somatic practices that teach the brain safety again. This approach is compassionate, evidence‑based, and deeply human. It honours both your biology and your lived experience.
Why the Brain Matters in Chronic Pain
When pain persists long after an injury has healed — or appears without any clear physical cause — the nervous system may have shifted into protection mode. Neuroscience shows that many forms of chronic pain are driven by learned neural pathways rather than ongoing tissue damage. In other words, the brain can misinterpret safe signals as dangerous, creating what researchers call neuroplastic pain — a real pain experience, but a false alarm .
This is not “imagined pain.” Brain imaging studies show that neuroplastic pain activates the same regions as injury‑related pain. The difference is the source — the brain’s interpretation rather than the body’s damage.
The hopeful part? Learned pathways can be rewired. Pain can be unlearned. And your nervous system can return to a calmer, more accurate state.
Symptoms Commonly Linked with Neuroplastic Pain
The Pain Psychology Centre describes how neuroplastic pain often shows up across multiple systems of the body, not just one area. Their clinical list includes:
Back pain
Neck and shoulder pain
Migraine and headache
Joint and limb pain
Fibromyalgia and widespread pain
Pelvic pain
IBS and gut symptoms
Bladder symptoms
Jaw pain / TMJ
Skin symptoms
Dizziness and vertigo
Tinnitus
Brain fog
Post‑concussion symptoms
Fatigue and ME/CFS
Long COVID
Insomnia
Anxiety and panic symptoms
Functional neurological symptoms
These symptoms often fluctuate, migrate, or intensify during stress — a hallmark of a sensitised nervous system rather than structural damage.
How I Help You Retrain Your Nervous System
1. Pain Reprocessing: Teaching the Brain Safety Again
Pain reprocessing helps you reinterpret pain sensations as non‑dangerous. When the brain stops treating normal signals as threats, pain naturally decreases. This is the same approach validated in clinical trials where 66% of participants became pain‑free or nearly pain‑free after treatment.
I guide you through gentle somatic tracking, curiosity‑based awareness, and nervous‑system‑calming practices that help deactivate the alarm system.
2. Emotional Processing: Releasing What the Body Holds
Unprocessed emotions — fear, grief, anger, chronic stress — can amplify pain. Emotional processing has been shown to reduce pain by helping people safely feel and express what has been held inside.
In my sessions, we explore emotions with kindness, spaciousness, and nervous‑system sensitivity.
3. Somatic and Nervous‑System Regulation
I introduce grounding, breathwork, and sensory awareness to help your body shift out of fight‑or‑flight and into regulation. When the body feels safe, pain signals soften.
4. Movement Confidence and Graded Exposure
We rebuild trust in your body through small, supported steps. Movement becomes a place of exploration rather than fear.
5. Integration and Long‑Term Resilience
You learn how to maintain progress, recognise early signs of nervous‑system activation, and support yourself with tools that fit your life.
What Recovery Often Looks Like
People I work with commonly notice:
Pain reducing in intensity and frequency
More freedom in movement
Better sleep and energy
Less fear around pain
Clearer thinking and improved mood
A sense of coming home to themselves again
Recovery is rarely linear — but it is absolutely possible.
A Few Words About My Approach
My work is gentle, relational, and grounded in the science of how the nervous system heals. I bring together neuroscience, somatic coaching, emotional processing, and compassionate presence. I don’t push your body; I listen to it with you. I don’t treat pain as a problem to fight; I help you understand it as a message that can be softened, reinterpreted, and eventually released.
If you’re living with chronic pain, you deserve support that honours both your biology and your humanity.
If You’re Ready to Explore This Path
If you’d like to understand whether your symptoms may have a neuroplastic component — or you’re curious about how this approach could help you — you’re welcome to reach out. I offer sessions in Bath and North East Somerset, as well as online.
Your body is not broken. Your pain has a story. And together, we can help your nervous system learn a new one.
